At The Heritage Practice, our people are our greatest strength.

We are a close-knit team of highly experienced heritage and conservation professionals, bringing together decades of expertise from senior roles within local planning authorities, Historic England and private practice.

We share a passion for architecture, design and the historic environment, together with a commitment to providing clear, thoughtful and practical advice.

As a small, independent consultancy, we work closely with our clients and each other, combining our individual expertise to deliver a genuinely personal and collaborative service.

Kate Graham

Founder & Director

Kate Graham founded The Heritage Practice in 2011 and is a highly experienced heritage and conservation professional with an extensive background in historic building conservation, architectural history and planning. Before establishing the practice, Kate was Conservation and Design Manager at the London Borough of Islington and, previously, Senior Historic Buildings and Areas Adviser at Historic England. Her earlier career included roles at Chris Blandford Associates and the Architectural Heritage Fund.

Kate has a distinguished academic background, holding a First Class MA (Hons) in Ancient History from the University of St Andrews, an MA in The City of Rome from the University of Reading and a Postgraduate Diploma in Building Conservation from the Architectural Association. She has extensive expertise in historical research, listed building assessment and the interpretation and application of heritage policy, alongside experience of high-profile architectural and development projects across London and the UK.

Kate combines a passion for architecture and the historic environment with a constructive, design-led approach to development. She particularly enjoys balancing heritage considerations with opportunities to optimise the potential of historic buildings and places. As a member of the Islington Design Review Panel, she brings further expertise in design quality and the relationship between contemporary architecture and the historic environment.

Charles Rose

Director

Charles Rose is a highly experienced heritage and conservation professional with over 25 years’ experience in the historic environment, urban design, planning and building conservation. Trained in environmental design and building conservation, Charles joined The Heritage Practice as Director in 2018, following 12 years as Principal Conservation and Design Officer at the London Borough of Camden, and earlier conservation roles at Westminster and Lambeth

His extensive local authority experience provides an in-depth understanding of heritage policy, the planning process and the challenges of adapting historic buildings and delivering development in sensitive historic environments.

Charles specialises in providing strategic heritage advice on complex projects, working closely with clients and design teams to develop creative, practical solutions. He brings a pragmatic, commercially aware and collaborative approach, combining sound professional judgement with a clear understanding of his clients’ aspirations.

Hannah Walker

Principal Heritage Consultant

Hannah Walker is a highly experienced heritage, conservation and design specialist with over 20 years’ experience in the historic environment and planning. She holds a degree from the University of Oxford and an MSc in Historic Conservation from Oxford Brookes University, and is a member of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC), reflecting her longstanding passion for architectural history and the built environment.

Hannah has spent much of her career in local government, holding conservation and planning roles at Ashford Borough Council, the London Borough of Lambeth and the London Borough of Camden, where she was Principal Conservation and Design Officer. This experience has given her an in-depth understanding of heritage policy, development management and a wide range of historic building types, with particular expertise in London's historic terraced houses.

Hannah specialises in providing heritage and design advice on alterations to listed buildings, development within conservation areas and complex redevelopment schemes in sensitive historic environments. She combines detailed historical analysis with practical, constructive advice and has experience preparing heritage assessments, advising on major refurbishment projects and acting as an expert witness at public inquiry.

Ann Robey

Archivist & Researcher

Dr Ann Robey FSA is an experienced conservation and heritage professional with over 20 years’ experience in architectural history, historical research and the historic environment. Throughout her career, she has worked with leading national heritage organisations, as well as smaller local organisations and charities.

Ann specialises in architectural, social and economic history, bringing a depth of historical knowledge and research expertise to the understanding and assessment of historic buildings and places. Her work encompasses a broad range of historical research and interpretation, helping to establish the significance and evolution of the built environment.

An accomplished researcher and writer, Ann has an extensive publication record including books, academic articles, exhibitions and collaborative research projects. Her expertise provides an important foundation for the detailed historical research and analysis undertaken by The Heritage Practice.

Mandi Tranter

Practice Administrator

Mandi Tranter provides administrative and operational support to The Heritage Practice, helping to ensure the smooth day-to-day running of the consultancy.

Working closely with the directors and wider team, Mandi assists with project administration, client communications and the coordination of the practice's activities.

Her role helps the team maintain the responsive, organised and personal service that is central to The Heritage Practice's approach.
